Item #25 – Take a Barre Class
40 Things for 40 Years in 40 Weeks: Item #25 (Things I Never Do) – Take a Barre Class
Given that I was never athletic in my youth, I’ve struggled to keep active and healthy in my adulthood because I didn’t have a “sport” that I played or an activity that I enjoyed already. As I have transitioned into being a mother of 2 REALLY active boys, I’ve definitely realized that being active only benefits me as I then have more energy to keep up with them. I’ve tried several fitness classes over the years - kickboxing, body pump, step aerobics, yoga, pilates and recently ballet from my #40for40in40 list. Trying something new is always scary for me but I had heard about the Barre class trend from several people. I thought it sounded like something I might like and so for that reason it became item #25 on my list.
Today I tried a class for the first time. It was not at all what I expected and it wasn’t easy by any means but it was fun! I met one nice gal that was also struggling like I was in her first class and we had a good laugh about it all. I also ran into one of my sorority sisters for the second time in a couple of weeks. We recently discovered that we’ve both lived in Washington just minutes from one another for the past 10 years and haven’t crossed paths until now.
While I don’t know if this will be a life long fitness interest for me, it was a challenge and it did make me realize that it is always good to try something new even if it doesn’t stick. It also affirmed that I am really enjoying my ballet classes (item #6 on my list) and that I really miss taking pilates (especially with my favorite instructor!).
