THE NINTH DAY OF CHAOS

Reality Check:
Today I really am feeling grateful. It truly is Magic Day!
My husband and I used to joke that December 31st was “Magic Day.” There was a time when we had one or both kids in daycare. Our childcare center used to be open on New Year’s Eve. My husband would have that day off work and since we didn’t have any other free childcare in town because we are transplants to Washington - we would send the kids to daycare anyway (because it was already paid for) and go to the movies.
Now that we have two kids in grade school that get out for winter break mid-December, Magic Day doesn’t always happen but it did today. So today I am grateful for the break and the calm before the Winter Break storm that begins tomorrow whereupon we will be entertaining the kids for the next two+ weeks. Here are today’s highlights:
I woke up feeling 50% better than yesterday which means I may have avoided the dreaded next stop on the congestion tour… a sinus infection. This is magical. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my husband for loving my congested face from a safe distance yesterday, my trusty sinugator for flushing my sinuses tirelessly, my old pals Mucinex, Tylenol and Umcka for medicating me and my kids for selflessly enduring extra screen time so that I could rest yesterday.
The magic of the flannel sheets returned this morning and I did not see a child surface until 6:00 a.m.
My husband worked from home today and so I got to do the slow kid-free walk through the Issaquah Highlands Safeway with the long pre-holiday shopping list while he watched them. Tom my regular checker, who is about 60, called me “young lady” when I saw him. I loved him for it.
I got to take a super long, hot shower with no kids around. This in itself is a vacation.
My husband and I got to leave the island to go see the new Star Wars Movie. It was 3 hours of sitting in the dark in total comfort. I may have even dozed off for about 5 minutes. The movie in my opinion was great despite what the hardcore fans are saying.
Pizza night was relatively painless as everyone actually had pizza and said it was good. There were hardly any dishes to do and I didn’t have to cook. The kids enjoyed watching Home Alone for the first time.
And both kids were asleep by 7:30. Now that’s true magic.
While I know the real work is still ahead of us for the next two weeks, I will bask in the glow of this moment and enjoy it.
Have a great night everyone!
