44 Things That Spark Joy a.k.a. Sh*t That Makes Me Happy:
#7-12: Home Organization Tools
I decided in my 44th year and in light of the fact that we are all (still) looking for things to spark joy in our lives to gather 44 things I’ve found along the way this past year and share them.
It’s no secret that I love home organization. Like I really love it. Like I love it so much I should probably be committed to Home Organizers Anonymous if such a group exists. When Mary Poppins said, “A place for everything and everything in its place…” many years ago, that struck a chord in me. I love having a place to put everything and a system that goes with it. I love it even more when that system is both functional and pretty to look at. If I know where things are then it gives me sanity and if I can open a cupboard or closet to find something beautifully displayed inside then it makes me even happier. Of course now having lived through a pandemic, being forced to be in my home for long periods of time questioning how I can make things a little better and more functional – has definitely ramped up that instinct.
My friend Annie says I am the most organized person she knows. I personally consider myself to be “somewhat organized” on the scale of organized people only because I know there is better way to do things out there. To some people I appear anal retentive, a little OCD and definitely Type A (I am usually the Monica Geller of most groups armed with my label maker) but I am okay with that. I’ve been called worse so I will take it as a badge of honor.
Now Albert Einstein famously said, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” If that’s true, then I guess my mind would be considered one of the empty ones and it means that I am no genius… but hey at least I know where everything is in my house Albert. As a mom of two messy boys and a busy working husband, half the battle of keeping us all on track on a daily basis is knowing where things are around here. I consider it to be one of my biggest jobs. Luckily it’s a job I enjoy and a challenge that I happily take on.
I love places like the Container Store, Storables, California Closets and the many ideas on Pinterest that are out there to improve a space. I have tons of respect and bow down to the ladies that founded the Home Edit Company… sadly though I could not bear the squealing and screeching noises from their series on Netflix and had to abandon watching the full episodes. Even with Reese Witherspoon in the mix (who I love) it was like nails on a chalkboard and I had to pull the rip chord after one episode. Thank goodness for fast forward so I could just hop to the reveals and gather ideas sans screeching pterodactyl sounds.
So I know what you are thinking… get to the point and share the knowledge! So here goes. In the past year I have found the following items that I have loved and have used them to organize my spaces and create systems. Among my favorites are baskets, jars, labels and yes… Tupperware-esque food storage containers. (Side note… I totally get why Tupperware parties were popular back in the day!) Here are my finds from the past year:
I hope you enjoy these items as much as I have and you find new ways to enjoy your spaces! Now get your label maker out and get to work! (Oh wait… that’s just me that has one?? If so, get one of those too. Ha!)
