Item #32 – Go to a Comedy Show

40 Things for 40 Years in 40 Weeks: Item #32 (Things I Really Enjoy) – Go to a Comedy Show

When my husband and I first were dating, we went to several concerts. After I fell asleep during a Dave Matthews concert where Dave was “jamming” with his special guest (who I have long forgotten the name of) for what seemed like an eternity and realizing that I no longer enjoyed that ringing in my ears hours after a show – we made a transition into seeing live comedy. But like many other things since we became parents, we haven’t had the chance to go see many shows lately and so it became #32 on my #40for40in40 list – Go to a Comedy Show.

We have had the opportunity to see some great performances – Robin Williams most notably. Not only did we get to meet Robin after the show (by being slightly stalkeresque I will admit outside the stage door after the show) but we got a bonus that night. We spotted another great British comedic actor Matt Lucas that was an audience member and had flown up from L.A. while filming Alice in Wonderland with Tim Burton to see Robin perform. At that time, not a lot of Americans were familiar with Matt’s work but we recognized him immediately. He was so gracious and actually seemed flattered that we knew who he was and were fans of his work. We still refer to this as one of the most magical nights we had in Seattle because not only did we get to meet two actors and comedians that we were huge fans of but it was NOT raining in Seattle that night while we were standing outside waiting to meet Robin. Now that’s true magic!

We’ve been fans of Demetri Martin’s work for a while now so when we found out that he was coming to Seattle last night, I ordered tickets. The show was held at the Moore Theater in Seattle. If you aren’t familiar with this venue, it opened in 1907 and only has around 2,400 seats. Demetri did not disappoint. He performed for almost an hour and a half which included a lot of jokes, his “drawings” and his guitar accompaniment segment. We laughed until our faces literally hurt.

The show was preceded by dinner at one of our favorites, RN74, and we also got to enjoy seeing many of the holiday decorations that were around downtown as we drove in, walked to and from dinner and walked back to our car. So although it was raining last night, there was definitely some holiday magic sprinkled in there last night!

It’s simple activities like these that remind me that not only do we need adult time away from our kids on a regular basis to make us better parents but also the healing power of laughter even if it is just for a few short moments.

And so that completes #32 on my list. 19 items checked off the list and 21 to go! Stay tuned for more… #40for40in40
